Just starting out with new dreads

I started my dreads in 2009. A month after they were started by my left-handed loctician (hence the reason my locs are twisted counter clockwise) I found out I was 5 weeks pregnant. Let's just say my son had my dreads growing like wildfire.

Dreads were started with what looked like black gel to me. Then I started using Murray's Black Beeswax.

It was just after my locs hit their one year anniversary that I really started to research hair care because as I was looking up loc styles loc care came along with it.

Thats when I learned about the damage black gel does and the build up beeswax causes.

After I gave birth to my son, my hair follicles became dormant again causing my hairline to thin and break off because they were so weak.

I have decided to use all natural products now like shea butter along with Jamaica Mango & Lime Loc Grow to retwist. I have the whole line of the Jamaican Mango & Lime and this is where I am today!

loc products that work for me

I started my locs Aug 14 2011 I found nubian Kinks locing pomade to be wonderful. I use Roni's artistic hands maintenance products to be great for daily maintenance.And for the thin hairline I use Dr. Miracle temple and nape gro balm twice a day and it works.

Hi Shawali,
After 3-6 months, it's a good idea to check in with a professional and certified loctician (a specialist who knows about starting and maintaining dreadlocks).

You don't have to visit every week, but getting regular advice - especially if this is your first time with locs - isn't a bad idea.

Ever heard of someone not visiting the dentist? Their teeth likely aren't the healthiest, right?

As to which products to try, your path may be something like Danielle's: we all have to go through some trial and error to find the hair care products our dreads will love.

The best advice I can share is to stay as natural as possible when it comes to ingredients. Some of the ideas listed here...

Danielle, gel and beeswax can do a number on your hair especially if you're not using a residue-free shampoo and some kind of hair rinse like apple cider vinegar.

Glad you found a product line that works for you. the Mango & Lime products from The Rasta Group gets a lot of mentions online.

Need advice from fellow loc wearer

I was wondering if you had any advice for someone that just started their locs 3 months ago?

I was wondering if it's better to maintain your locs yourself or have a professional do it. Can u recommend any products that will help me maintain my locs? I'm happy that i finally decided to loc my hair. I wouldn't change my hair for anything in the world.
