Exclusive! Rock Star INXS star Jordis Unga's Unbelievable Dreadlocks

» RELATED CONTENT

A sleeper hit this summer, Rock Star INXS has been like a "must watch" combination of Surreal Life and American Idol.

With only a few weeks left until the final singer is chosen to lead INXS, one of the show's contestants dazzled with her rock star dreadlocks style as well as vocal style.

Jordis Unga highlighted just how wonderful dreadlocks can be. And despite being eliminated for coming unglued on stage, her dreadlocks stayed tight!

If you're wondering how Jordis got her dreadlocks looking so flawless for her rock star pictures, you can be sure she had a great team of on-location stylists helping her pull off those great styles.

Rock Star INXS' public relations team put us in touch with a stylist from Jordis' area for the low down on her high style. Adrienne McCann of Urban Hair, chimed in on Jordis' rock star dreadlocks style.

"Jordis' own hair is dreaded, and she has added dread extensions for color and length. That is a very fun and temporary way to get your own dreads to look fuller or even longer, and can be taken out without any damage to your own dreads."

McCann, a licensed cosmetologist with advanced training from Hair Police, specializes in "dread perms" where hair is formed into dreadlocks. Then, a chemical solution is applied to open the cuticle as well as another one to close it. The result is locked dreads without the long wait.

If you're looking for a rock star look, then you're going for what's hot and what's wild. "The crazier the better," says McCann.

But you've got to remember the basics, of course, so Adrienne McCann's tips for great dreadlocks, include:

  • Shampoo at least once a week
(she recommends Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap, which can be found in most health food stores. "It smells great and leaves a nice tingly- feeling on the scalp. They also make a lavender scented one that some of my clients swear by.")
  • Itchy scalp? Get rid of dandruff with a deep cleansing shampoo
(try Neutrogena T-Gel. McCann says it isn't conditioning which doesn't compromise the dreads.)
  • Palm roll your dreadlocks weekly
(McCann swears by Murray's Hair Pomade -- the one in the orange can -- but if you're looking for an alternative without petroleum, we suggest checking out our dreadlocks product page).

For cosmetologists interested in offering dreadlocks, McCann suggests, "Study and learn all you can, so you can offer anything and you are ready for anything. Knowing several methods and techniques will prepare you for all types of clients." She went on to remind up-and-coming stylists that there's not just one dreadlocks method that works on everybody, so educate yourself.
